L’organo di Giovanni Corrado Verlè (1701 Vils - 1777 Roma)
nell’Oratorio del Crocifisso a Roma (1744). Il profilo del suono
The Organ by Johann Konrad Wörle/Giovanni Corrado Verlè
(1701 Vils - 1777 Rome)
in Rome’s Oratorio del Crocifisso (1744). A Sound Portrait
The organ builder Johann Konrad Wörle was born in Vils (in Außerfern, Tyrol) and worked in Rome
from at least 1733 on, achieving great prestige there during his lifetime for his instruments. To this
day, there is no doubt that he ranks among the best craftsmen in his field. At the present time, ca.
35 organs built by Johann Konrad Wörle between 1733 and 1777 are known to have existed. Of these,
ca. 20 instruments have survived: half of these are in the city of Rome and the remainder are in the
provinces of Rome, Frosinone, Rieti, Viterbo and Terni, while one organ is found in Corté, Corsica. All of
Wörle’s organs are under protection according to government law (in Italy: Beni Culturali, in France:
Monument Historique).
Wörle’s organ positive in the Oratorio del Crocifisso, which is very typical for its maker, is presented in
its original function as an instrument accompanying the liturgy – and with music, associated with
Rome, that was created at the same time as the organ. This music was found in handwritten sources
in Rome (Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, Biblioteca dell Accademia Nazionale) or in the Santini Library
in Münster and includes works by Andrea Basili, Girolamo Chiti, Lorenzo De Rossi, Gaetano Franzaroli,
Giovanni Battista Martini, Domenico Zipoli and Anonymus.
Florian Bassani, professor of musicology at the University of Bern and expert on sacred music of Rome
th
th
in the 17 and 18 centuries, is the extremely qualified organist for this production. The vocal parts
in the Masses and the further liturgical pieces were performed by the Schola Benedictina from the
Monastery of Muri Gries in Bozen/Bolzano.
This world-premiere CD was recorded in September 2014. This took place on the initiative and under
the leadership of Hildegard Herrmann-Schneider.
